Capturing Editing and Posting wildlife Videos and Sounds

How I do It

Some of our HowPeg site visitors have inquired about the mechanics of capturing and posting nature sights and sounds to the web and I will share with all how I accomplish it albeit it is not sophisticated as web page creation goes,  but it works for me.

Equipment and services required--- Wireless  Color camera that captures sound as well as video and will withstand all the elements.  Portable and adjustable heavy duty birdfeeder stands for mounting and positioning the cameras. A wireless receiver that can be connected to a VCR or DVD recorder, and or TV Monitor. A Computer running Microsoft Windows XP which includes Windows Movie Maker and a device for capturing video as well as line in or similar audio input. A web page software package, A broadband internet connection and finally space on a internet hosting Site which could  then include your registered domain name. In my case HowPeg.com.

I use the X10 wide angle instant on cameras which are very reasonably priced and are wireless, and capture good sound quality and are able to withstand rain, heat and cold. Lens angle , and focus adjustments are versatile . note the cameras transmit their video and sound to a wireless receiver via antenna but the power module must be connected to normal AC power via outdoor extension cords.

I then use the X10 video and audio receiver to receive the signal and control each camera via remote control selection using power modules that transmit their signals through the power wiring in the house. (X10 sells a video receiver only but you need the audio and video receiver to record both sound and picture)

I connect the audio and video receiver output jacks  to the input jacks of a VCR (plan to switch soon to a DVD recorder) which output is  then connected to a TV monitor via  input jacks. Then after setting up a camera on a site (nest, bird feeder, hummingbird feeder etc) via a metal stand with selectable sections, (purchased at Wildbirds Unlimited) select the camera I want to see and record to video tape while also monitoring the live activity on the TV screen. I actually then take the TV monitor output jacks connect them to a second X10 transmitter and transmit the live pictures to other X10 receivers connected to  TV monitors , as is one in my office so that monitoring can be done while doing other things. This is how I spotted the cat about to attack the hapless Cardinal in time to prevent the tragedy at that time..

If a special project is underway, such as nest activity, I change the tape every two hours and at the end of the day or when I spot something interesting or if some change has taken place, I select the tape that covers it fast forward or reversing to find the scenes  and then using  the video capture in Windows Movie Maker, select the scenes I want to edit.

Using Movie Maker , I then edit the video to create a WMV video and then incorporate it into my web page, using Microsoft Front Page.

The final step is copying my webpage changes to my domain pages on my web Hosting  provider  using the Windows Explorer FTP function. Note the Web hosting provider should have Video Streaming capability.

That's it in a nut shell. A very inexpensive way to produce and share Nature scenes. It does take a little work though, which for most, would be a labor of love.

The content of these pages consumes many megabytes of data and some can only be viewed from Broadband Internet Connections. Otherwise the videos would take enormous periods of time to download, even with the streaming function. Broadband use  however  is growing and will someday be the only practical  way to connect to the internet, in my opinion. This will be driven by the increasing use of audio and Video content and in interactive ways will provide greater and greater opportunities, for educational and entertainment experiences.

Hope this helps a little for those who have expressed an interest.
